Winston-Salem, NC(March 10, 2011) -- Ronnie Bassett, Jr. has made some significant changes over the last few months in preparation to make a title run in the UARA-STARS Series.
Bassett, who struggled through his rookie season in the UARA-STARS last year after having two different crew chiefs calling the shots and having a high point of winning the pole and finishing a strong second at Lonesome Pine Raceway around mid-season. During the off-season he and his family owned team decided that it was time for a change and with options open all around the UARA garage, Bassett decided to move into one of the most successful rides in the tenth year series.
Bassett signed on to drive for Jamie Yelton's Fat Head Racing
team, in a ride vacated by another young driver who set the series on fire last season winning six of the 16 races and finishing second in points. For Bassett it was a move that he knew he had to make to contend for wins every week and become one of the series major drivers.
"After watching what this team did last year with Brennan Poole, it was a no-brainer to get in this ride if we could," said Bassett. "Jamie Yelton and his guys have built a great operation at Fat Head Racing and we're proud to be a part of this team."
For Bassett, the move into the most successful ride on the tour was a great move, but at the same time, the young driver knows that he has to be able to perform now with such a great team around him.
"I know that this team was great last season and the pressure is on us to perform right out of the gate," continued Bassett. "All the pieces are in place for us to run as good as they did last year, but this is basically a new team as well. I'm a new driver, the crew chief is new and some of the guys on the team are new, but we're still driving the same equipment. We have to perform and I think having Nick Hutchins as a crew chief and having Shawn Treadaway spotting for me will give us a great head start this weekend."
Bassett will certainly be one of the drivers that others will be keeping an eye and a stopwatch on this weekend as the UARA-STARS Series kicks off their season at Hickory Motor Speedway in Newton, NC. Based on how the young driver has tested this off season the attention will be well deserved as he's expected to be one of the drivers contending for the win on the historic 3/8 mile oval.
